Hyvinkää is a growing city with approximately 47,000 residents, offering a good environment and a variety of options for its residents in different stages of life.
We are the 5th biggest city in the Uusimaa region and 23rd in size of the total 310 municipalities in Finland. We build and develop the city in a systematic manner on a long-term basis and organise services for our residents with high quality.
Our city provides an opportunity for different experiences in the areas of outdoor activities, culture, exercise and sports throughout the year.
Live and work in Hyvinkää
Hyvinkää has a very high work self-sufficiency (95,4 % in 2017) as a result of its central location. This means plenty of opportunities in different sectors for its inhabitants. Commute to and from the city is part of the daily life of many people. Hyvinkää is both home of commuters to the capital city area and the place of work for many commuters who live elsewhere as the city provides jobs in many fields.
Local employers include Konecranes Oyj, Hyria Koulutus Oy, Ahlsell Oy, Hyria Koulutus Oy och Hankkija Oy which all have their main offices in the city. Other employers include KONE Oyj, Onninen Oy, Etteplan Oy and Myllyn Paras Oy.
Public sector employers include the City of Hyvinkää, the Joint Municipal Authority for Social and Healthcare in Central Uusimaa (Keusote) and the Hyvinkää Hospital which is part of the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS). The new Hyvinkää Hospital opened in 2018 and is an on-call maternity hospital that offers the services of nearly all medical specialities.

The city centre provides easy access to different services and Hyvinkää offers a variety of choice for living both in the city centre and rural areas. The city invests in its infrastructure and services, the newest buildings being the Metsäkaltevatalo building with school and kindergarten services. Kipinä, the new building for the upper secondary school Hyvinkään lukio and the adult education centre Hyvinkään Opisto.
Even though the official language of the city is Finnish, families may choose for their children to complete grades 1–6 of comprehensive school in English attending the English Classes of Hyvinkää or in Swedish at Svenska skolan i Hyvinge.
Culture and sports
Whether you are into competitive sports or exercise for fun, the city offers excellent opportunities for dozens of different sports. Some 250 kilometres of bicycle lanes and park roads maintained by the city guarantee plenty of pedalling for commuters and fitness enthusiasts alike. The city bikes and bicycle maps are a good way to get started.
Right in the city centre you’ll find the partially pram and wheelchair accessible walking trail “Health forest trail” Terveysmetsäpolku while the Kytäjä-Usmi hiking area features nearly 50 kilometres of marked trails and seven campfire sites by wilderness lakes. The rich nature site is ever-popular throughout the year.
Located near the city centre, Sveitsinpuisto is a recreation and nature conservation area with an extensive network of nature trails. In wintertime the downhill skiing centre in the northern part of the park offers great conditions for downhill skiing and snowboarding. For cross-country skiers, a continuous network of 70 kilometres of ski trails is maintained around the urban area.
Culture has always had a special place in Hyvinkää, whose history has been embellished by unforgettable artists such as Helene Schjerfbeck and Tyko Sallinen.
As a result of active strategic work our city has in recent years become a lively and versatile culture city, described being bigger than its size. Residents actively participate in various activities, future culture-makers are educated and events draw visitors also from outside the city borders.
Yearly events include Red Carpet, a festival focusing on Finnish cinema and connected programme. The city is venue for both concerts and events drawing audiences from outside both city and country borders.
Local culture and art institutions include Hyvinkää Art Museum, Hyvinkää City Museum, and the Finnish Railway Museum where the collection includes the only surviving Imperial coaches of the Russian Emperors and many other interesting items connected with Finnish railway history.

The known history of the Hyvinkää region starts from 1495. The development of the current city was significantly impacted by the Helsinki–Hämeenlinna railway, which was completed in 1862. Hyvinkää became an independent municipality and joined Uusimaa region in 1917.
